Case Study 2

Fire and Emergency Planning

TestIT's customer is a major Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, and TestIT provides the authority with its only independent and ISO9001:2000 certified software assurance facility.

Project Background: The customer wished to migrate its business-critical software applications from Microsoft NT4 to Microsoft Windows 2003 Server and was concerned that the migration could cause unforeseen problems, so decided to commission TestIT to validate the many business-critical and safety-critical applications.

Here is a selection of the applications that were tested:

Staff Absence Recording System
The application records all sickness, holidays & other absences (e.g. training), transfers, promote / demote, team schedules, employees & ranks, roles assigned, vehicles / appliances in use & where etc. It also contains a reporting function on every aspect of the system such as sickness absences in last quarter & reasons, appliances not in use in last year etc.

Purchasing Ordering System / Purchasing Invoice System
The application is used to place orders both internally and externally for any team / station / department within the authority. The sister application is then used to create and process an invoice for the same order number once approved (approval is via an integrated internal / automated email link to line manager).

Fire Hydrant Tracking and Mapping System
This application includes a link to A to Z and Ordnance Survey functionality and is overlaid with station / command boundaries to map against hydrants etc. It is also used to map current & new street / building lay-outs and plan best / fastest routes to an incident and for the essential maintenance of Fire Hydrants.

Incident Recording System
The application is used to log emergency & planned work, to dispatch mobile teams to incidents and receive information about the incident closure. It is also used to produce reports / overall figures of all records and sort by date / area etc.

TestIT was able to verify that the applications listed above (plus in excess of 30 or so other miscellaneous applications) provided the expected functionality that is required within the authority's demanding environment.

TestIT also used its secure extranet facility to manage testing and provide up-to-the-minute status reports and all associated test documentation.
